How To Handle Unhappy EmployeesWhat if you have an unhappy employee? Are you ready to fire that person?

It is not a good idea to let people go in such a situation since it is extremely hard to find professional employees. Besides, finding a replacement will utilize a lot of your time and patience when you should be focusing on how to make your business to grow and bring a daily profit. So instead, look for proper ways of dealing with an unhappy employee.

First find out the reason for the discontent, otherwise you won’t be able to deal with him or her. And have you ever thought that the problem may lie with you?

Here are some of the more common reasons for unhappy employees:

  • Low salary
  • No promotion or perceived unfair promotion of colleagues
  • Disproportionate job distribution

So how should you manage them?

Conversation. Speak to your employees one on one. Do not organize a meeting with the whole staff unless it’s necessary.

Create an atmosphere of trust. If you want your employee to be open-minded, show your trust and be open-minded yourself.

Be objective. Even if you don’t like what your employee is telling you, try to be objective, and if he’s telling the truth, admit it.

Keep your temper. No one likes being reprimanded and shouted at, so listen attentively and express your opinion afterward.

Document everything. Write notes and document your conversations so you can refer to the information whenever you have another similar situation.

But it would be great if you avoided unhappy employee situations. That’s why it’s a good idea to ask them to answer a list of test-questions from time to time. For instance, ask a question like  “Are you satisfied with your salary?” and require “yes” or “no” answers, or ask them to rate their opinions from a scale of one to five, with 1 meaning “not satisfied” and five meaning “very satisfied.”

Also hold regular meetings to be aware of what’s going on in your staff.
