Recognizing Unhappy Employees
As a manager you need to recognize unhappy employees before they decide to quit. Remember that a qualified employee must be appreciated as he or she may be a great profit source to the company. Here are some tips to help you recognize unhappy employees.
- Drop in the staff room unexpectedly.
Most managers sit in an office and have no idea about what’s going on amongst the staff. So drop in for several minutes and have a chat. Then pay attention to who is happy to see you and who’s not. And if an employee is unhappy he or she will not show great interest in seeing you.
- Check the quality of the work.
If an employee is unsatisfied he or she will hardly work at full capacity. So check performances weekly. And talk with the ones who are showing low performance. Do it privately and pay attention to whether he or she is actively listening to you or not. If they aren’t, it means that your employee may be indifferent.
- Look at response times.
For instance, if you send a task by e-mail, pay attention to how soon your employees answer and whether they ask you any questions. This may hint at their general attitude towards you and their job.
- Check the web browser history from time to time.
If you discover that an employee is spending a lot of time on non-related work web sites, it could mean that your employee does not care about the job. But be attentive not to insult your employees. Note that frequent browser history inspections may be considered an invasion of their privacy.
- Look at the attendance records.
If your employee is frequently absent and doesn’t have a medical explanation for it, pay attention to him. Find out the reasons, this may be the result of his/her reluctant attitude to the job.
- Organize meetings regularly.
Be aware whether your employees are satisfied with their job or not. Ask them to express their thoughts. Try to notice who sounds more negative and then arrange an individual meeting with him. Also, if your employees don’t want to make suggestions and don’t ask any questions during the meeting, it may mean that they simply want the meeting to end as soon as possible.
- Take the complaints seriously.
Many managers don’t take complaints seriously until their employees decide to quit their jobs. So be attentive, especially if you get the same complaints from different employees.
In other words be ready to listen to your employees and do your best to meet their needs.
